Terms of Service for Character AI

These terms set out the agreement between you and Character AI. Reading them takes a few minutes and saves misunderstandings later.

The rules that apply to every Character AI member

  1. AcceptanceBy opening characters-ai.net or using any Character AI chat feature you agree to these terms. If you disagree with any part of them, please stop using the service.
  2. Age requirementCharacter AI is available only to people aged 18 or older, or the higher age of majority where you live. Confirming your age is your responsibility.
  3. What we provideCharacter AI is an entertainment service offering conversations with fictional virtual companions. It is not a dating site, a counselling service or a way to meet real people.
  4. Fictional charactersEvery companion, name, photograph and biography on Character AI is fictional and computer generated. Any resemblance to a real person is unintended.
  5. Not professional adviceNothing a companion says is medical, legal, financial or psychological advice. For real problems, consult a qualified professional.
  6. Your accountYou are responsible for keeping your login details private and for everything that happens under your profile.
  7. One person per accountAccounts are personal. Sharing, selling or transferring a Character AI account to somebody else is not permitted.
  8. Accurate detailsThe contact details you give must be correct and kept up to date so we can reach you about security or billing.
  9. Acceptable useYou agree not to use Character AI to harass others, to attempt anything unlawful, or to produce content involving minors or non-consenting real people.
  10. Prohibited contentRequests aimed at generating illegal material, threats, extremism or content that violates another person's rights will be refused and may end your access.
  11. No scrapingAutomated collection of pages, images or companion output from Character AI is not allowed without written permission.
  12. No reverse engineeringYou may not attempt to copy, decompile or otherwise derive the underlying systems that power Character AI.
  13. Service availabilityWe work to keep Character AI online continuously, but maintenance, provider outages and updates can interrupt access without notice.
  14. Changes to featuresCompanions, settings and features may be added, altered or withdrawn as the service evolves.
  15. Free and paid accessBasic chatting is free. Optional paid plans unlock extra features and are described clearly before purchase.
  16. BillingPaid plans are charged in advance through our payment providers. Prices shown include applicable taxes unless stated otherwise.
  17. RenewalsSubscriptions renew automatically for the same period until cancelled. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current paid term.
  18. RefundsRefunds are handled case by case and according to the consumer rights that apply where you live. Contact support with your transaction reference.
  19. ChargebacksRaising a chargeback instead of contacting support may result in immediate suspension while the claim is investigated.
  20. Your contentYou keep ownership of what you write. You grant Character AI a limited licence to store and process it so the service can function.
  21. Our contentThe Character AI name, design, code, imagery and companion profiles remain our property and may not be reused without permission.
  22. FeedbackSuggestions you send us may be used to improve Character AI without any obligation or payment to you.
  23. ModerationWe may review flagged conversations to enforce these terms and to keep the platform safe.
  24. SuspensionAccess may be suspended or ended if these terms are broken, if payments fail, or if activity threatens other members or the platform.
  25. Ending your useYou can stop using Character AI and close your account at any time from settings.
  26. Third-party servicesLinks and offers from partners are governed by their own terms, and we are not responsible for what happens on their sites.
  27. DisclaimerCharacter AI is provided as is. We do not promise that conversations will be accurate, uninterrupted or suitable for any particular purpose.
  28. Limitation of liabilityTo the fullest extent the law allows, our liability is limited to the amount you paid Character AI in the twelve months before the claim arose.
  29. IndemnityYou agree to cover reasonable losses we suffer because you used Character AI in breach of these terms or of the law.
  30. Force majeureWe are not liable for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control, including network or provider failures.
  31. Changes to these termsUpdated terms are published on this page. Continuing to use Character AI after publication means you accept the new version.
  32. Governing law and contactThese terms are governed by the laws applicable at our place of establishment, and questions can be sent to legal@characters-ai.net.
