The commitments Character AI makes about your data

1. Who we areCharacter AI operates the website at characters-ai.net and the companion chat service reachable from it. Where this policy says we, us or Character AI, it means that operator.
2. Scope of this policyThis policy covers information handled through the Character AI website, chat rooms and member accounts. It does not cover third-party sites you reach by leaving Character AI.
3. Adults onlyCharacter AI is intended for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from minors, and any account found to belong to a minor is removed.
4. Account informationWhen you create a member profile on Character AI we store the nickname you choose, an email address for recovery and the password in hashed form. Legal names are never required.
5. Chat contentMessages you exchange with a companion are stored so the conversation can continue later and so your companion can remember earlier details. You can delete them at any time.
6. Preferences and settingsCharacter AI keeps the personality settings, favourite companions, language and interface choices attached to your profile so they load on every device.
7. Payment dataCard details are handled by our payment providers. Character AI stores only a transaction reference, the amount, the currency and the status of the payment.
8. Technical dataWe log IP address, browser type, device class, referring page and timestamps. This data keeps Character AI stable and helps us detect abuse.
9. CookiesCharacter AI uses cookies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences and measure aggregate traffic. Blocking them in the browser may break parts of the chat.
10. AnalyticsAggregated, non-identifying usage statistics tell us which pages and companions work best. Individual conversations are not part of that reporting.
11. Advertising partnersWhere Character AI promotes offers, partners may set their own cookies. Their processing is governed by their own privacy notices, not this one.
12. Why we process dataWe use your information to run the chat service, keep accounts secure, handle payments, answer support requests, meet legal duties and improve Character AI.
13. Legal groundsDepending on your location we rely on contract performance, legitimate interests in running a safe service, your consent for optional cookies, and legal obligation.
14. No sale of chat logsCharacter AI does not sell, rent or trade your conversations, your email address or your companion history to data brokers or advertisers.
15. Service providersHosting, storage, email delivery, moderation and payment vendors process data on our instructions only, under written confidentiality obligations.
16. International transfersOur providers may operate outside your country. Where that happens, transfers use recognised safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
17. Storage securityData is encrypted in transit, access to production systems is limited to staff who need it, and administrative access is logged and reviewed.
18. Retention periodsActive account data is kept while your profile exists. Deleted conversations are purged from live systems promptly and from backups within the normal backup cycle.
19. Closing your accountYou may close your Character AI profile at any time from account settings. Closure removes your companions, chat history and preferences.
20. Access requestsYou can ask for a copy of the personal data Character AI holds about you and we will respond within the period required by the applicable law.
21. CorrectionIf your stored email or profile details are wrong you can correct them in settings or ask support to fix them for you.
22. ErasureYou may request full erasure. We will comply unless a specific record must be kept for accounting, fraud prevention or another legal reason.
23. Objection and restrictionWhere local law provides it, you can object to processing based on legitimate interests or ask us to restrict processing while a dispute is resolved.
24. Withdrawing consentOptional cookies and marketing emails can be switched off at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing that happened before.
25. Data portabilityOn request Character AI will supply your account data in a common machine-readable format so you can move it elsewhere.
26. Automated decisionsCompanion replies are generated automatically, but Character AI does not make legal or similarly significant decisions about you by automated means.
27. Security incidentsIf a breach is likely to affect your rights we will notify affected members and the competent authority within the timeframes the law sets.
28. Third-party linksPages on Character AI may link to external sites. We are not responsible for their content or their handling of your data.
29. Changes to this policyWe may update this notice as the service develops. Material changes are announced on this page and, where appropriate, by email.
